Promoting independence is a fundamental aspect of a Direct Support Professional's role, and providing choices while encouraging personal decision-making is the most effective method. This approach empowers individuals, allowing them to take ownership of their lives and responsibilities. By offering options, individuals can weigh their choices and make decisions that reflect their preferences, which enhances their self-esteem and confidence.

Encouraging personal decision-making also includes supporting individuals in understanding the potential outcomes of their choices, thereby fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
